It is unfortunate that over 25 million people have been diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes (T2D) in the United States. In 1990, I started volunteering with the American Diabetes Association, as it is a great cause. Emotional stress triggers release of hormones (cortisol and adrenaline) which affect blood sugar. This causes a problem with regulating hormones that may precipitate diabetes for people at risk. Impaired digestion is another diabetic trigger as impurities in the pancreatic cells impair the production of insulin. High fat content of animal products is implicated in the development of diabetes. A low-fat, high-fiber diet can lessen the need for insulin. My client lowered his amount of animal products within as little as 90-days, by slowly converting to a vegan/raw foods diet. Remarkably, his need for insulin has lowered. Animal products have been shown to cause cancer. Look for Hormone & Antibiotic Free Meat when shopping for your family.

When our body is continually undergoing stress, fatigue, or is lacking sleep it will take its toll on the body, with marked physiological effects on the body. The diabetic needs a normal well balanced diet including meal planning and incorporating foods such as barley, brown rice, and vegetables. Stick to the color of the rainbow for a variety of vegetables.

Some Ayurvedic home remedies for diabetes management are using fenugreek seeds, bitter melon, and turmeric. Vata season is form November through February, late fall to winter. Blood purifying herbs such as rosemary, fenugreek, turmeric, and cilantro can be added to your diet, after discussing with your physician. Include whole grains in your diet along with green leafy vegetables, garlic, onion, spinach, and plums. Try to avoid fruits that are high on the glycemic index as much as possible. Try to give up brewer’s yeast, pineapple, mangos, white potatoes, salty foods, and spicy foods.

Adults over 45 should be screened every 3-years. Overweight children starting at the age of 10 should be screened, then again at age 12, 14, etc. Your physician may suspect that you have diabetes if your blood sugar level is 200mg/dl or higher. The test will include an oral glucose tolerance test, fasting blood glucose level test, and or a hemoglobin A1c test.
